Abstract: In this talk, we introduce an open-source macro energy model, GENeSYS-MOD-TR, and examine the quantitative scenarios for low-carbon futures of the Turkish energy system at aggregated (country level) and regionally disaggregated (NUTS-1 level) levels. We have employed four different storylines for the future European energy system. They are quantified and implemented for the European energy system (30 regions, mostly single countries, including Turkey) using the open-source global energy system model, GENeSYS-MOD v3.0. We have compared the results of all scenarios at aggregated and disaggregated levels and found that there are significant differences among them. Specifically, the hydrogen production (and its use) has increased considerably in the disaggregated model when compared to the aggregated level results. The major reason for these differences is found to be the better estimation of regional renewable capacity factors (wind and solar) in the disaggregated level compared to aggregated level.

About the Speaker: Dr. Emre Çelebi received his BSc degree in Management Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, in 2001. He earned his MSc and Ph.D. degrees in management sciences from the University of Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 2006 and 2011, respectively. Later, he joined Kadir Has University, Center for Energy and Sustainable Development in Istanbul, Turkey. He was actively involved in EU Horizon and national projects on energy transition and modelling. Currently, he is an assistant professor at the Industrial Engineering Department, Yeditepe University, Istanbul. His research interests include models of energy markets, supply chain design/management problems, large-scale optimization/equilibrium problems and algorithms for their solution. His recent research is in regional energy hubs, co-planning of transmission/generation investments with market equilibrium models in electricity markets and open-source macro energy models & data. He has published in leading journals such as Energy Systems, Energy Policy, Electricity Journal, European Journal of Operational Research, Computers & Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and Transportation Science.
